About Us

We are the Asian American Bowling Association. We were formed with the purpose of hosting no-nonsense and efficiently-run bowling tournaments for our bowling friends. We particularly cater to the Chinese and Japanese bowling community of Northern California. The idea for this started with a conversation so many years ago with, at first, Barry Huey, and then with Tosh Hamamoto. Both of these fine gentlemen, since deceased, were very influential in Chinese and Japanese league/tournament bowling. At that time, the current leadership of the group was associated with the Oakland Chinese Bowling Club and was experienced in the running of large tournaments around the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. The discussions revolved around a group that would run tournaments without interference from any of the existing governing bodies of Chinese and Japanese bowling. It was also decided that the group would monitor the entry of bowlers into the tournaments and that average manipulation masters would not be tolerated. The tournaments would fill the gaps in the annual calendar between the existing Chinese and Nisei bowling tournaments as another competition for the bowlers to enjoy, essentially creating an amateur Asian-American bowling tour.

The group started in 2002 with the first Spring J/C Invitational Bowling tournament held in Fremont at Cloverleaf Family Bowl the weekend before Memorial Day. Bowlers competed with each other in doubles and 4 person team events.

The next to start was the Chinese New Year tournament, held at the AMP South Shore bowling center in Alameda in 2004. The tournament runs the last weekend of February. This was an all doubles event.

Last to start was the Labor Day C/J Invitational Bowling Tournament held at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno Labor Day weekend of 2006. Bowlers competed with each other in doubles and 4 person team events.

In 2009, we added the Fall J/C Invitational to the schedule. This tournament features doubles and team competition, and is held at 4th Street Bowl in San Jose in mid November.

All four tournaments are still active to this day. The only change has been for the Chinese New Year tournament. The venue has been moved to 4th Street Bowl in San Jose.

This website is dedicated to the memory of Barry Huey and Tosh Hamamoto.
